Sofía Fernández Díaz
Sofía Fernández Díaz is continually searching for hidden relationships around us. Her process is fueled by an intimate knowledge of both ancient and modern processes, combining experimentation, intuition, and play to discover new and unexpected commonalities between unrelated materials. Her familiarity with naturally occurring patterns and formations allows her to recreate these systems in her work using beeswax, fibers, and natural dyes. From Mexico City, she has engaged in fruitful exchanges with artisans across Mexico throughout the past decade, sharing her understanding of their processes and daily rituals through workshops focused on natural pigments and dyeing techniques. Fernández recently had her first solo exhibition in Chicago at Goldfinch Gallery. This summer, she will attend a residency with ACE in Buenos Aires to create Ciclos Dos, the second installation of an ongoing collaborative project with performance artist Sofia Gabriel. Fernández was awarded the Joan Livingston Scholarship for her MFA in Fiber & Material Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and she was granted the Radicle Studio Residency at Hyde Park Art Center in 2023.
